Personality & Traits

General Overview Known almost exclusively as "Mickey", generally and particularly off-duty.

Often irreverent, occasionally impertinent Ballentyne is a brilliant scientist with little regard for authority far too much self-confidence and no real grasp of the more mundane Starfleet regulations (including those governing personal appearance). Boundless energy, abundant charisma and quick wit have normally helped him navigate social situations, although he can come across as arrogant at times. While his ability to think outside of the box and tackle complex problems creatively have made him a useful addition to the crew and keep him out of trouble for the most part.

Spoiler
Although he doesn’t know it, Ballentyne is an Illyrian/Human hybrid. His mother was born in the Illyrian colony on Hetemit IX, although had moved to Earth in her youth. As a result, Ballentyne benefits from a strong constitution, enhanced immune system and seems to have greater than average physical resilience.

Strengths & Weaknesses Scientific brilliance and curiosity – Exceptional astrophysicist and creative problem-solver, has an intuitive grasp of scientific principles. Has been known to say “Fascinating…” when swept up in an inquiry.

Improviser – Adapts and refines approach as he goes, gravitates towards practical and is guided by intuition. Bluffs well and can easily hide his feelings (if he wants to).

Physically robust – Illyrian genetic heritage gives Ballentyne a strong constitution, immune system and greater than average strength and resilience.

Confident, friendly and charismatic – Makes friends easily and other people generally want to be around him. Excellent networker.

Subversive, rule-breaker – Disregards or ignores rules that he does not perceive to be of value (e.g. minor regulations around personal appearance). Good at bluffing and will tell a “white lie” when convenient.

Arrogant – Privileged upbringing and general personal confidence can sometimes alienate others, rarely doubts himself or backs down.

Inexperienced – Young and still developing as both a Scientist and a Starfleet officer, can easily let curiosity override caution and so take unnecessary or excessive risk in the pursuit of knowledge

Promiscuous and emotionally immature – Has yet to build a meaningful romantic relationship. Misses a number of Proteus crew who rotated to different postings in 2259.

Physically small - Standing at 5'5 Ballentyne is shorter than average for a human male, particularly a serving Starfleet officer. Can be underestimated or talked down to, tends to push himself forward more as a result.
Ambitions Not clear at this time. Generally curious and wants to see the galaxy.
Hobbies & Interests - Hiking, climbing and mountaineering – developed after leaving Earth for Starfleet
- Piloting – an enthusiastic shuttle pilot, completed basic flight training at Starfleet Academy
- Sailing
- Card games
- Piano – competent musician, limited somewhat by handspan
- History and culture – particularly non-Earth

Personal History Born 2232 on Earth in South Africa into the influential Ballentyne family, Mickey’s early years were split between South Africa and England (where he was educated) on Earth and a number of non-Federation worlds. His father was a serving Federation diplomat and civilian government official, specializing in Federation external relations and accession negotiations. As a result, Michael spent some years of his childhood on Trill and Bolarus Prime where he gained an appreciation for and curiosity about alien culture and biology.

Against parental wishes, applied initially for Starfleet Academy for admission at the age of 18, but was initially unsuccessful, gaining admission a year later. Was relatively successful at the Academy and did exceptionally well academically.
